Broadband Stimulus Grants

Do you feel that providing High Speed Broadband Service to your customers is out of reach?  Do you feel that the costs to build out, operate, and maintain such a system are unrealistic because the rates required for such a system are unaffordable to your customers?

Now that President Obama’s Stimulus Package has passed in its final form, the Stimulus Bill provides $7.2 billion for broadband infrastructure projects.  Given how quickly stimulus money is expected to move, now is the time to identify viable broadband projects, locate the appropriate funding sources, and begin work on materials that will support an application for a loan or a grant.
Broadband funds will be distributed by two agencies:

1. The Department of Commerce, through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (“NTIA”)
2. The Department of Agriculture, through the Rural Utilities Service (“RUS”). 

There is a preference in the Stimulus Bill for broadband infrastructure projects that are “shovel-ready” and can rapidly commence to create jobs and stimulate the economy.  There is a goal of using at least 50% of the funds for infrastructure activities that can begin in 120 days.
